Discussion about The Warmth - Tourniquet
X-MEN
Here on Tourniquet, The Warmth create a soundscape of sorts, relying heavily on visions from other times and other places, breaking as much new ground as Bowie did when he released Low. Tourniquet is a gentle wash of layered emotional meanderings and timeless personifications, never looking inward, but rather, creating an outward ever expanding beacon into space that rises like some solar flare, jettisoning essential particles of matter that will ride across the galaxy on solar winds, seeding the universe with musical wonder. On the other hand, Tourniquet is cool, barely warm, played with a graceful passion, like fingertips dancing across the tip of a candle. There are times when the music builds like a collage, dovetailing the parts together with precision, and creating a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts ... while at other times the songs bring to mind actual places, places such as the mystical side streets of old Morocco, or nearly any city in the world gone silent under a blanket of snow. This is achieved through a mixture of synths and electronics on top of which has been laid all the elements needed to create a modern rootsy folk vibe, and to that end Tourniquet has been polished so brightly that the music and packaging mix to become one. Tourniquet has been presented on clear 180g vinyl, dropped into an extremely heavy clear plastic bag, along with the album’s artwork, and arrives looking as sumptuous as it sounds. The Warmth is a two man project, with a couple of guests appearances, where Paul Foreman steps out of his Chicago based neo-psychedelic band Soft Speaker and teams up with Carl Saff of Emperor Penguin, and known for his his studio mastering work. Together they find themselves acting as two spirited magicians, morphing and transforming sound.Review by Jenell Kesler
